Neuromyelitis optica and pregnancy.

Bourre B, Marignier R, Zéphir H, Papeix C, Brassat D, Castelnovo G, Collongues N, Vukusic S, Labauge P, Outteryck O, Fontaine B, Vermersch P, Confavreux C, de Seze J; NOMADMUS Study Group. Neurology. 2012 Mar 20;78(12):875-9.

This study demonstrates that pregnancy influences the course of NMO closely similar to what is found in MS except for the third trimester where we observed an increase of relapse rate.

Long-term follow-up of acute partial transverse myelitis.

Bourre B, Zéphir H, Ongagna JC, Cordonnier C, Collongues N, Debette S, Fleury MC, Outteryck O, Hannequin D, Vermersch P, de Seze J. Arch Neurol. 2012 Mar;69(3):357-62.

This study demonstrates that brain MRI and oligoclonal band in CSF are both independently highly predicitive of an evolution to MS after a first episode of partial myelitis.

Longitudinal change detection in diffusion MRI using multivariate statistical testing on tensors.

Grigis A, Noblet V, Heitz F, Blanc F, de Sèze J, Kremer S, Rumbach L, Armspach JP. Neuroimage. 2012 May 1;60(4):2206-21.

This study demonstrates that there is some longitudinal diffusion abnormalities in the brain of NMO patients especially in patients with clinical progression.

Alzheimer's disease, oestrogen and mitochondria: an ambiguous relationship.

Grimm A, Lim YA, Mensah-Nyagan AG, Götz J, Eckert A. Mol Neurobiol. 2012 Aug;46(1):151-60.

In this review, we summarized the role of neurosteroids especially that of oestrogen in AD and discuss their potentially neuroprotective effects with specific regard to the role of oestrogens on the maintenance and function of mitochondria, important organelles which are highly vulnerable to Aβ- and tau-induced toxicity.

Increased risk of multiple sclerosis relapse after in vitro fertilisation.

Michel L, Foucher Y, Vukusic S, Confavreux C, de Sèze J, Brassat D, Clanet M, Clavelou P, Ouallet JC, Brochet B, Pelletier J, Labauge P, Lebrun C, Lepage E, Le Frere F, Jacq-Foucher M, Barriere P, Wiertlewski S, Laplaud DA; Club Francophone de la Sclérose En Plaques (CFSEP). J Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry. 2012 Aug;83(8):796-802.

This collaborative study demonstrates that in vitro fertilisation may be proposed in MS patients but that LHRH antagonist should be used rather than agonist in order to limit the risk of relapse.

Xanthurenic acid binds to neuronal G-protein-coupled receptors that secondarily activate cationic channels in the cell line NCB-20.

Taleb O, Maammar M, Brumaru D, Bourguignon JJ, Schmitt M, Klein C, Kemmel V, Maitre M, Mensah-Nyagan AG. PLoS One. 2012;7(11).

This study generated original and key results showing that xanthurenic acid binds to brain receptors whose kinetics, distribution and pharmacology are specific. When stimulated by xanthurenic acid or synthetic related ligands, differentiated neuroblastoma cells exhibited an excitatory response that led to cytosolic calcium ion increase. Altogether, the data described herein strongly support a neurotransmitter/neuromodulator role for XA in the brain.

White matter atrophy and cognitive dysfunctions in neuromyelitis optica.

Blanc F, Noblet V, Jung B, Rousseau F, Renard F, Bourre B, Longato N, Cremel N, Di Bitonto L, Kleitz C, Collongues N, Foucher J, Kremer S, Armspach JP, de Seze J. PLoS One. 2012;7(4).

This paper demonstrates that cognitive dysfunctions in NMO may be correlated with the atrophy of several white matter region atrophy.

Neonatal ventral hippocampal lesions modify pain perception and evoked potentials in rats.

Sandner G, Meyer L, Angst MJ, Guignard B, Guiberteau T, Mensah-Nyagan AG. Behav Brain Res. 2012 Oct 1;234(2):167-74

This paper shows that neonatal ventral hippocampal lesions-evoked alteration of brain development induces mechanical hypoalgesia, thermal hyperalgesia and auditory sensory changes. The data also contribute towards elucidating mechanisms underlying sensory deficits in neurodevelopmental diseases, including schizophrenia.
